There are three main types of aerial lift platforms: scissor lifts, boom lifts, and bucket lifts. They are all useful for a variety of purposes and job sites. However, before you choose the right one for the job, you should understand the parts and general anatomy of aerial lift platforms!

Anatomy of Aerial Lifts

Although each lift is different, there are general parts that you should know and understand about the equipment. Below is a list and descriptions of parts you can expect to find on an aerial lift platform.

  1. The steer wheels attach to the steering axle and steer the lift while it’s moving. They’re able to support the weight of the machine, as well. You can find front-steering, rear-steering, and AWD models.
  2. Drive wheels, on the other hand, are the wheels attached to the driving axle, which gives power for driving.
  3. The chassis, or frame, is the main structural component of aerial lifts. It provides support for the entire machine.
  4. A ground console unit holds the controls for driving and operating the lift. It will be located on the ground and will be operated by a second person, not by the person on the lift platform.
  5. A platform control console is operated by the person on the lift, meaning it is located on the platform itself.
  6. The small cylinder that connects the platform to the jib is called a rotator. It allows side-to-side movement of the platform and has the ability to rotate and tip the arm of the platform.
  7. So, what is the jib? The jib comprises a projecting arm that is connected to the platform, allowing the extension of the boom. It increases the range of motion, which is helpful in small or constricted work environments.
  8. The tower lift cylinder is operated with hydraulics and raises and lowers the main boom while the jib lift cylinder controls the movement of the jib. You’ll also find a slave cylinder that helps lower and raise the jib.
  9. The main base and main fly sections are adjoined to provide height and extension.
  10. The tower base and fly section provide structure for the main base, main fly, and platform.

Should I Keep an Inventory of Spare Parts?

Like any equipment, you will have to maintain and replace parts occasionally. If you frequently use your aerial lift platform, it can save you time, money, and downtime by keeping essential parts on hand.

It may be helpful to have cylinders and wheels in your personal inventory! You’ll also want to have the right tools to make any quick repairs.
