Inspecting Your Telehandler Before Use
Telehandlers are an incredible tool used in many industries. They can move materials and help projects get done more quickly. However, when you operate a telehandler, it’s essential to make sure it’s functioning properly before you get to work. Our team at Adcock Equipment has put together a brief guide to help you complete a pre-inspection before every use.
Why is Pre-Inspection Important?
Safety and reliability are key aspects of operating equipment. Telehandlers move and place heavy materials, so it’s critical to make sure all components are functioning properly. There could be several people at a worksite, and although they should never be underneath the equipment while it's operating, a pre-inspection can reduce the chance of unexpected malfunction.
Completing an inspection every time you operate the equipment will help identify any problem areas and prevent further damage. It also helps the operator become more familiar with the specific machine they’re using.
Pre-Inspection Checklist
There are several different areas of your telehandler that need to be checked during your inspection. Going by area can be less overwhelming and help you take notice of every detail.
1. Drivetrain
There are several components of the drivetrain that should be checked before operation.
- Tires and wheels, including air pressure, lug nuts, and tread
- Brakes, including the fluid levels
- Hydraulic hoses, including attachments
2. Mechanics & Hydraulics
Next, you should inspect the hydraulic system and mechanical elements.
- Hydraulic tank caps should be in place
- Hydraulic tank filter and cab air intake filter should be free of debris
- Hydraulic oil levels should be equivalent to the manufacturer recommendation
- Check all circuits for correct operation
- Check all hoses for leaks and signs of damage
3. Power Unit
The power unit needs to be in top shape in order for the telehandler to perform correctly.
- Check fluid levels, including engine oil, battery fluid, coolant, and transmission fluid
- Test the battery and inspect all electrical wiring
- Check that the radiator is free of debris
- Look for signs of damage or buildup in the exhaust system
- Make sure the drive shaft is well lubricated
4. Boom & Forks
Telehandlers use a boom to lift materials, so you should also inspect the condition of the forks and boom before use.
- Check that the boom hoses are installed correctly and there are no leaks
- Make sure the boom is correctly lubricated
- Test the chains and cables, making sure bolts are tightened
- Look for wear on the boom pads and replace them when necessary
5. General Components
Once you’ve looked over the specific components of each area, there are a few general things to do before you get to work.
- Check all controls for functionality
- Take note of the gauges
- Log any necessary information and locate manuals
