You might think of a telehandler as a forklift on steroids, but they can do much more. These heavy-duty machines work a lot of magic with their fork attachments, but you can also switch out attachments and get all kinds of useful service out of them.

Here’s a quick introduction to the wonders of the telehandler. Telehandlers are just one example of the excellent aerial equipment we sell and service here at Adcock Equipment Inc. We’re in Edmonton, Alberta, where we serve Calgary, Red Deer, and all of Western Canada.

What Is a Telehandler?

Telehandler is short for telescopic handler, a multi-use piece of equipment also called a reach forklift, boom lift, teleporter, lull, or cherry picker. They have a long heritage of use in agriculture for moving hay and hay bales. They are primarily used for material handling and can perform many of the same tasks as a forklift as well as a variety of jobs that require serious power and reach. For many jobs, it’s the first machine to arrive on site, and the last one to leave because it’s so versatile.

Forklift Function

With forks installed, a telehandler can do everything a forklift can but better. They tend to have very high weight capacities ranging from 2,500 to 5,000 kilos, and they can place materials where they’re needed, such as lifting roofing supplies onto a roof. They can quickly load and unload trucks without ramps.

Lifting Work Crews

Many models of telehandlers can also lift people safely with a work platform attachment. A typical work platform supports about 450 kilos and can hold one or two people along with materials and supplies. Expect safety features such as high backs for extra stability, safety restraints, and door safety pins to keep the gate secure.

Rough, Uneven Terrain

Telehandlers are well suited for uneven and rocky terrain. Their triangular footprint helps them stay stable, and many models have hydraulic systems or outriggers for increased stability.

Snow Removal

A variety of attachments are available to convert telehandlers into snow-removing monsters. These work with the machine’s forks, so they are easy to slide into place. Use a snow bucket attachment to lift and move heavy snowfall. These can span up to 6 feet wide, so they cover ground quickly. The reach of the machine allows you to dump or stack the snow well away from the area you are clearing. You can also add a snowplow attachment or a snowblower to clear streets and parking lots, or a broom attachment.

Other attachments include cranes, buckets, booms, augers, grabs, and cutting heads.
