Six Tips for Safe Forklift Operation
Many businesses depend on forklifts for efficient daily operations. It’s hard to overstate how useful these machines are, but they are also potentially dangerous to operate, so it’s critical that operators be well trained and that all safety protocols are embraced.
Here are some tips on safe operation and preventing accidents from Adcock Equipment Inc., where we are proud to carry one of the largest selections of new and pre-owned aerial equipment in Western Canada. Our dealership is in Edmonton, Alberta, serving Calgary, Red Deer, and beyond.
1. Certify All Operators
All operators should be professionally trained and certified in forklift operations. Poor training is responsible for many accidents. Employers should evaluate their team’s forklift operating skills at least once every three years to ensure that they are operating the machines safely.
2. Wear Appropriate Safety Gear
Operators should always wear appropriate safety gear, including safety shoes, hard hats, and a high-visibility vest. It’s important to tuck in loose clothing so it doesn’t get caught in the equipment.
3. Maintain a Good View of Your Workspace
Having clear visibility in all directions is critical to safe operation. In some cases, driving backward offers better visibility than driving forward. Keep the forks low to the ground to improve the line of sight. Use headlights. Make eye contact with other workers to confirm that all parties are aware of where you are moving. Install mirrors for safer approaches around corners.
4. Know Your Specific Machine
It’s critical to know specifics about the forklift you are operating. Forklifts come in different types and classes. Different types of forklifts have their own weight limit, turning radius, traveling speed, and more. Some are designed to be operated while standing, and some are operated while sitting. Make sure operators are trained in their specific machine and that they understand and observe the machine’s limitations.
5. Inspect Forklifts Daily
Operators should inspect forklifts daily to ensure that they are safe to operate.
- Test all of the operating controls including the steering wheel, brakes, lights, and horn
- Inspect the tires
- Check the forks for cracks or damage
- Check fluid levels
- Check for any fluid leaks
6. Implement a Floor Marking System
Implement a color-coded system to indicate paths for vehicles and pedestrians, as well as to identify any physical hazards. Governing the flow of traffic can help prevent forklift accidents.
Please embrace these simple tips, and maintain the highest possible standards of training and safe operation.
