How Are Boom Lifts Used?
Boom lifts have grown in popularity for many industries and they have a reputation for being able to assist with many different tasks. These helpful machines have a unique history and provide endless possibilities to help you finish your projects efficiently.
History
The boom lift was created in 1951 by a man named Walter E. Thornton-Trump, also called by the nickname Ted. He invented boom lifts for one simple reason; to make working in high places easier. He was born in Beaver Lake, Canada, and originally named his invention the Giraffe, but the term “cherry picker” ended up sticking.
Many people originally used his invention to pick fruits from tall orchard trees, hence why the term cherry picker became so popular. It was difficult to climb ladders while carrying heavy baskets of harvested fruits and the boom lift quickly became a safer and more efficient way to complete harvest.
A few short years after the initial invention of the boom lift, it was used on fire trucks and other utility vehicles. In 1960, Ted patented his idea with the following descriptions: a power-operated boom structure and a lifting apparatus for electric line and construction workers.
Types and Uses
Now there are several different types of boom lifts, namely depending on how they are operated. Most types can be used for similar purposes, but some are more adequate for specific tasks.
Articulating Boom Lifts
When you hear the term cherry picker, this typically refers to what’s known as an articulating boom lift. These machines have sections that can move independently so workers are able to gain access to especially hard-to-reach places. Plus, they have tight turn radiuses helping workers get into smaller spaces.
These types of lifts are best used for tree trimming on muddy or uneven terrain. They are also well suited for firefighting, electric work, maintenance, and construction work.
Telescoping Boom Lifts
Another common type of boom lift is the telescoping boom lift. They have a mast boom that extends out and up rather than bending as an articulating lift would. They definitely need room to move, but they are extremely stable machines.
This type of lift can be particularly useful for bridgework, roofing jobs, and for high-stacking of items. These are typically the highest-reaching boom lifts and can reach their maximum height quickly. Plus, although it seems like they need more space to operate, they can still maneuver small spaces.
Both types of boom lifts can be operated indoors or outdoors, but you might find that articulating lifts are better suited for indoor spaces.
Safe Operating
No matter which boom lift type you need or how you plan to use it, it is crucial to have a solid understanding of safe operating guidelines. You will be reaching tall heights and balance is essential. Never operate a boom lift without previous training.
